One year in…

Parece mentira como passou tão depressa, mas faz agora mais ou menos um ano estávamos a fotografar o nosso primeiro casamento juntos em Portugal… parece que foi há imensos anos atrás, e houve tempos entre esses dias e hoje que parecia que não chegávamos a lado nenhum. Como se pedalássemos cheios de “ganas” naquelas bicicletas de ginásio, estão a ver? Mas olhando para trás, um ano mais tarde, sentimos um certo orgulho no progresso que fizemos, nas coisas que aprendemos e as pessoas fabulosas que conhecemos e com quem trabalhámos.

Cometemos erros, somos os primeiros a admitir, mas quem não comete!… e sem dúvida que aprendemos umas coisas. Percebemos que na verdade não faz mal dizer que não, ás vezes. E dissémos que não… uma vez ou outra, por querermos ser autênticos e fiéis ao nosso trabalho. Depois repensávamos e questionávamos em agonia pela dúvida, questionando se tinha sido boa ideia recusar trabalho quando ainda estamos há tão pouco tempo no mercado  sendo ainda “ninguém”… mas sabem uma coisa? É o melhor a fazer, e fez-nos acreditar ainda com mais convicção que estamos no caminho certo. Também aprendemos que também não faz mal o facto de nem toda a gente gostar de nós, ou o nosso estilo de fotografia, ou o nosso “fetiche” em fotografar pés… na verdade não faz mal nenhum, é óptimo. Porque há pessoas que gostam de nós, mesmo assim, tal como somos. Pessoas com o mesmo sentido estético a mesma maneira fora do convencional de ver as coisas . Esta é a nossa gente. Não queremos que toda a gente goste de nós, queremos que alguma gente nos AME, o tipo de gente que nós AMAMOS. Até é fácil… Também aprendemos que não é muito boa ideia ficar muito perto do tio Joaquim durante a cerimónia de casamento, porque quando ele derruba o vaso das flores durante a troca de alianças, toda a gente vai olhar para ti a pensar que foste tu…

Ainda temos um longo caminho para percorrer, e para sermos honestos não existe sequer um destino ou uma chegada em fotografia, mas se há uma coisa que somos bons juntos, é em viagem… e esta, que está a começar agora, promete.

Hard to believe how quickly it went by, but it was about this time last year that we were photographing our first wedding together in Portugal… seems like a million years ago, and there were times between then and now when it felt like we were getting nowhere, like we were pedalling furiously on one of those silly spinning bikes, you know the ones I mean? But looking back now, one year later, we are quite proud of the progress we have made, the things we have learnt and the fabulous people we have worked with.

We made mistakes, we will be the first to admit, but then who doesn’t… and we’ve definitely learnt a thing or two. We figured out that it’s actually ok to say no, sometimes. And we did, say no… once or twice, for reasons we felt strongly about, and then agonised and second-guessed our decision, questioned whether it was  good idea to be turning down work when we were still so new, and “nobodies” but you know what? It was the right thing to do, and has made us even more certain that we are on the right path. We learnt that its ok that not everyone is going to like us, or our style, or our foot fetish… in fact, its more than ok, its great. Because there are people out there who do like us, just the way we are, people with the same sense of style, the same unconventional way of seeing things. Those are our people. We don’t want everyone to like us, we want just some people to LOVE us, the kind of people that we love. Pretty simple, really… Plus we’ve also learnt that it’s not a good idea to be standing too close to Uncle Bob at the wedding ceremony, because when he knocks the flowers over during the ring exchange, everyone will think it was you…

Clearly we still have a long way to go and to be honest, there isn’t even a destination, there is no “arriving” in photography, but if there’s one thing were good at together, it’s journeys… and this one is off to an awesome start!
